Australia will not be able to help all Afghans working with its military, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said today.
Australia announced on Monday that it would send 250 members of its armed forces to Kabul to help evacuate its citizens and an undisclosed number of Afghans who were granted visas following their co-operation with Australia.
U.S. forces controlling Kabul airport resumed evacuation flights today, a day after the chaos was caused at the airport by desperate Afghans trying to flee the country.
Australia participated in the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) that fought the Taliban and trained Afghan security forces in the years following the ousting of the Taliban in 2001.
More than 39,000 Australian troops have served in Afghanistan and 41 of them have died there.
Morrison noted that Australia has accelerated visa procedures for 430 people from Afghanistan. The Australian Government also stated today that none of those already in Australia will be deported to Afghanistan.
