Afghanistan – Johnson: Pressure on Biden to extend the removal deadline

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will urge US President Joe Biden this week to extend the deadline for his departure from Afghanistan.

Johnson will host an online meeting tomorrow, Tuesday, with leaders of the G7 most developed economies to discuss the crisis in Afghanistan.

Armed Forces Secretary James Hippie said Britain was pushing for the deadline to be extended beyond 31 August after identifying thousands of people, including Afghans, whom it wanted to remove. But the Taliban would have to give their consent in that case, which means British forces could not count on an extension, he said.

James Cleverley, the secretary of state for the Middle East and North Africa, said the Taliban seemed to be working together for the time being, but the government could not expect it to last.
