Good news for the public: The Sismanogleio General Hospital in Athens has resumed normal operations following a fire at its First Department of Internal Medicine. Health Minister Adonis Georgiades announced the restoration via his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday, 11 July 2026.

Full Operational Recovery

According to Georgiades, damage caused by the fire has been fully repaired, and affected departments—including the First Department of Internal Medicine—have returned to service as of today. Thanks to the swift coordination between the Ministry of Health, the 1st Health Region, and the hospital’s administration, clinical services were restored rapidly and safely.

Relocation and Restoration

The First Department of Internal Medicine—the unit most severely impacted—was temporarily relocated to a suitable alternative space, ensuring uninterrupted patient care. Simultaneously, cleaning and restoration works in adjacent areas were completed, allowing the Second Department of Pulmonology and the Dialysis Unit to resume full, safe operation.

Continuity of Care

The Sismanogleio Hospital is now participating normally in today’s on-call shift schedule, continuing to deliver high-quality healthcare without any compromise to safety or service standards.

In his full statement, Georgiades extended heartfelt congratulations and sincere thanks to the entire hospital staff—including physicians, nurses, administrative and technical personnel, and cleaning teams—for their extraordinary dedication over two consecutive days. He praised their professionalism, sense of duty, and selflessness in restoring full functionality as quickly as possible.

He emphasized that the rapid response, seamless collaboration across institutions, and unwavering commitment of healthcare workers stand as a powerful testament to the resilience and operational readiness of Greece’s National Healthcare System. The Ministry of Health pledged continued support for the hospital’s full infrastructure recovery and for maintaining uninterrupted service to citizens.
