ADMIE: Third Connection Under Review in Crete – Testing of Major Interconnection Proceeding Smoothly

in

Crete’s major interconnection is currently undergoing testing, and the initial results are positive, as stated by Manos Manousakis, the president and chief executive officer of ADMIE. The tests for the electrical interconnection have successfully reached 100 MW (out of a total capacity of 1 GW) and continue to progress. The goal is for ADMIE to conclude by the end of summer that everything is running smoothly so that the connection can be placed into permanent operation at full power. Measures have been taken to ensure sufficient electricity supply in Crete under all scenarios in the medium term. Specifically, this year and next summer, backup units already installed on the island will play a key role. In the medium term, ADMIE will conduct studies to determine if these units, along with upcoming battery installations, suffice to protect Crete in case of damage to either of the two connecting cables linking it to the mainland system. Among the solutions ADMIE is considering is the construction of a third interconnection. As explained, such a connection should link to a different part of mainland Greece than the first two connections, which were tied to Peloponnese and Attica. While it’s still early, whatever solution is chosen, the aim is to make Crete’s power supply absolutely secure in any scenario.
