A group of activists staged a symbolic occupation of a construction crane at the metro worksite on Alexandras Avenue near Moussouxydou Street today (15 May 2026). They climbed to the top of the crane and hung a large banner expressing solidarity with the refugee community of Alexandras.
‘Hands Off the Refugee Squats – Victory to the Hunger Strikers’
The banner read: ‘Hands Off the Refugee Squats – Victory to the Hunger Strikers’. In a statement, the activists said the crane protest was accompanied by a one-day symbolic hunger strike — an act of solidarity with Aristotelis Hantzis and Suzon Doppagne, who are currently on hunger strike as part of broader mobilisations against the Attica Region’s redevelopment plan for the area.
A Plan Targeting Displacement, Not Social Need
The activists argue that the region’s redevelopment proposal is deliberately vague and does not aim to address social needs. Instead, they claim it seeks to displace the refugee community and hand over the space to commercial interests.
Call for March in Defence of the Community
The group has called for a demonstration on Saturday, 15 June 2026, to defend the community and block plans for forced evictions and the commodification of the area.
