Acropolis Elevator Closed for Repairs Due to Overuse – Discussing Installation of a Second Lift

The Acropolis elevator remains closed due to excessive wear and tear from overuse. As stated by the Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni, the lift has been out of operation for two weeks and will remain closed for at least another week. Speaking on the ‘Live You’ broadcast on SKAI TV during Wednesday’s midday show (May 21, 2025), the minister emphasized that when the elevator was installed in 2020, it was designed for 200 trips daily but is now used by at least 2,000 people daily to ascend the Sacred Rock. “The elevator is a machine, and as such, it suffers damage from overuse. It has been closed for two weeks and will remain so for at least another week to ensure absolute safety for those using it,” said the Minister of Culture. To repair the elevator, spare parts are needed from abroad since the Italian manufacturing company could not restore it due to extensive damage. Additionally, because of high visitor demand, the ministry is considering installing a second elevator. “We are already discussing the installation of a second larger-scale elevator,” noted the Minister of Culture.
