AADE Implements Camera-Based Vehicle Checks for ‘Inactive’ Cars

in

The AADE (Independent Public Revenue Authority) is launching extensive checks nationwide to identify vehicles illegally circulating on Greek roads. This initiative targets vehicles whose owners have electronically submitted their license plates and declared them as inactive, according to ertnews. Using tollgate cameras as the primary tool, photographic material from vehicle passages will be sent weekly by toll road concessionaires and cross-referenced with tax administration records. The General Directorate of Electronic Governance (G.D.E.G.) of AADE will then cross-check vehicle data against the Inactivity Archive of the Tax Administration to pinpoint vehicles that were declared inactive but passed through tollgates. Owners found in violation will face administrative fines of €10,000, equivalent to annual circulation fees plus late payment penalties. If the same offense is repeated within five years, the fine increases to €30,000, accompanied by a three-year driver’s license suspension. Toll road concessionaires must send encrypted electronic files weekly to G.D.E.G., including daily circulation numbers and unique passage IDs. For detected violations, further details such as date, time, toll station, and license plate photos will be requested. Detected vehicles’ information will be cross-checked with the owner’s tax declaration, followed by a visual verification of the license plate number. Once confirmed, an automated electronic notification is sent to the owner or holder who declared the vehicle inactive, along with photographic evidence. The owner can submit their views personally, via mail, through the myCAR platform, or via electronic messaging within 10 days to the relevant D.O.Y. or KEFODE. If no objections are raised, the respective fines of €10,000 or €30,000 will be applied.
