A Shield for Attica Against Drought – EYDAP Invests €2.5 Billion for Tomorrow’s Water Needs

in

Attica stands at a critical crossroads. Climate change, combined with increased water consumption in the basin and reduced water reserves, is creating unprecedented pressure on the region’s water supply system. The numbers speak volumes. Within just two years, reserves in Attica’s four main reservoirs have dropped by nearly 45% — from 1.2 billion cubic meters in 2023 to only 659 million in 2025. What was once an ‘orange alert’ warning has now become a harsh reality that must be urgently addressed.

According to official data, existing water reserves under current consumption rates will last less than two years, with some areas reporting increases of over 40% compared to last year. In response, EYDAP (Athens Water Supply and Sewerage Company) has stepped up with a comprehensive plan backed by cutting-edge expertise and unwavering determination.

With an ambitious investment program totaling €2.5 billion for the decade 2025–2034, EYDAP is implementing an extensive network of projects aimed at ensuring sustainable and resilient water supply for Greece’s largest metropolitan area. In Eastern Attica alone, projects worth €958.7 million are underway or planned, serving 410,500 residents through the construction of 1,400 km of pipelines and three new wastewater treatment plants. Work is already ongoing for more than 230,000 residents, with two new WTPs set to begin construction soon.

Additionally, €681.6 million is being allocated to critical infrastructure upgrades and replacements in the water supply network, while €364.5 million is invested in sewerage projects. These investments align fully with European policies on green and digital transition, adopting a holistic approach centered on climate adaptation.

EYDAP’s strategy extends beyond crisis management, shaping a comprehensive model for sustainable water resource governance. The ultimate goal is not only to protect Attica’s water resources but also to ensure high-quality, affordable services for all citizens. As water becomes one of the most valuable commodities of our time, EYDAP rises to meet this defining challenge of our era — guaranteeing that no resident of Attica is left without access to clean, safe, and sufficient water. However, full success depends on citizens embracing a culture of water conservation as part of daily life — a mindset that must be passed on to future generations.
