– A mother and former drug users confess: “All together we can achieve a lot…”
Amazed passers-by the square of the Municipal Market of Chania on Thursday night, they saw a group of young people, standing in the middle of the road and huddled together in a circle chanting some words.
It was a group of KETHEA Ariadne who participated in the event which aimed to raise awareness on the issue of rehabilitation from any kind of substances.
To understand the users and especially their families that no one alone can not “escape”, but needs the positive energy and mutual support of all.
With them at the event and a Χανιώτισσα mother. Despina, which – together with the 29-year-old daughter – are involved in the last four years in the KETHEA.
The mother’s words about how she realized that her daughter while she was a teenager, he did drugs, for the mistakes that he made, and the only path there is, shocking:
“Initially, I perceived the alcohol. The other substances came later. I’m not ashamed to say that I resented you because I didn’t understand what’s going on”
he said the Χανιώτισσα while continuing the soul’s confession stated:
“The most important thing is that they changed the behaviors of the child. He was aggressive, kept to herself, dropped out of school and other activities. These were signs that something’s not right. I tried doing it myself but can’t do it yourself. You need a specific course that I saw it in the KETHEA.”
But what was it that mrs. Despina “saw” in the KETHEA in which he went together with her daughter when she asked for help?
“I’m looking for my responsibilities and errors, which certainly exist. Every child has sensitivities and take things differently in the family. So there need special handling. Something which I didn’t know how to do it. I was kidding myself.. In the KETHEA I’m looking for and I find myself with activities, going out without being ashamed, and creating….”
In terms of the difficulties that exist in the course of treatment, mrs. Despina says:
“Difficulties are always there, especially for the man who made a use and makes a big fight to get away. But the family support is very important. Whoever the parent of the grasp and drop the egos and the shame, the sooner this is done, the sooner you admit that your house burns down and not working nothing well, opening up to the therapy center for dependent individuals within the groups where there is mutual….”
Together we can achieve a lot
This phrase is the key to the difficult course of rehab, as reported by ex-users who participate in the KETHEA Ariadne.
Manolis was using heroin for 9 years and the last 2.5 years is taking part in the group of KETHEA.
“All together, and everyone, make this clean effort, we support one another, we stand in society like everyone else and assert your rights, while before we didn’t have a mouth to talk”
Manolis on drug users he says: “everything is to ask for help, either from KETHEA, either from the person next to them”.
Three years, almost “clean”, declares the Sifis, who confesses that:
“I had lost many years of my life. I just got changed too much. What I want to tell the users to come knocking on our door. From the first day you will become other people. You see life differently”.
As he said the person in charge of the unit advisory of KETHEA in Chania, mr. George ΓαβÏιλάκης, on a monthly basis, the unit supports over 200 people.
Of these, approximately 140 are directly dependent and 70-80’s parents.
“We are focusing on the positive qualities and the positive values of man and all together we can do a lot of things” is the key to the road to rehab.
