65,000 Smart Electricity Meters Installed in Thessaloniki – DEDDHE’s Network Strengthening Investments

in

Thessaloniki is undergoing significant modernization, reinforcement, and expansion of its electricity distribution network. Following the severe weather event BORA in December 2024, which caused major disruptions in the region, DEKKHE (DEDDHE) has launched an initiative to fortify the grid against similar occurrences. According to documents submitted to Parliament, the plan includes: constructing undergrounding/upgrading projects covering a total length of 140km with a budget exceeding €14 million, scheduled for completion by the end of 2025; modernizing the overhead network over 30km at a cost of €1 million; upgrading 940 regional equipment points with remotely operated switching elements; enhancing tele-monitoring capabilities and enabling faster isolation/restoration during unplanned outages; accelerating the replacement of traditional meters with smart ones—65,000 smart meters have already been installed in the Thessaloniki area; completing firebreak zone projects near the network; and implementing annual inspections, maintenance, and cleaning procedures. These efforts significantly enhance the network’s resilience against climate change and extreme weather events, as evidenced by a noticeable reduction in unplanned power outages.
