6.4 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Papua New Guinea in the Pacific Ring of Fire

A powerful earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale occurred on Tuesday (May 20, 2025) off the coast of Angoram in Papua New Guinea, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The quake’s epicenter was located approximately 80 kilometers northeast of Angoram in northwestern Papua New Guinea, with a focal depth of about 10 kilometers. So far, there are no reports of casualties or significant material damage from the earthquake, nor has there been any tsunami warning issued. Papua New Guinea lies within the so-called ‘Ring of Fire’ in the Pacific Ocean, where tectonic plates meet, resulting in intense seismic and volcanic activity.
