6.0 Magnitude Earthquake South of Kasso and Karpathos: Tsunami Warning Issued

A powerful earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale occurred in the sea area south of Kasso and Karpathos, just before 2 PM local time on Wednesday (14.05.2025). According to the revised solution from the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens, the quake originated from a marine location 19 kilometers south-southeast of Kasso. At 3 PM, an alert was issued by 112 Greece regarding the possibility of a tsunami hitting the shores around the epicenter, advising residents to stay away from coastal areas. The earthquake was especially felt in eastern Crete and Rhodes. The focal depth of the strong tremor was calculated at 62.5 kilometers. The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) measured the earthquake at 6.1 on the Richter scale with a focal depth of 70 kilometers. The epicenter, according to EMSC measurements, is located 38 kilometers south-southwest of Karpathos and 164 km east of Heraklion.
