5.8 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Rhodes: Minor Damage and High Anxiety Reported

in

Residents of Rhodes were shaken awake by a powerful earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale early in the morning of June 3, 2025. Thanks to the quake’s depth (43.9 km), no injuries were reported, though minor damage was noted in several buildings. Despite this, the tremor caused significant alarm among both locals and tourists. The regional governor of South Aegean, George Hatzipetros, emphasized that while many tourists fled their accommodations temporarily due to panic, the state mechanism remains fully mobilized. “We are in constant communication with all islands in the region, and as of now, the situation is stable,” he stated. Authorities continue to reassure visitors unfamiliar with earthquakes and maintain readiness for any potential aftershocks. Mayor of Rhodes, Alexandros Kolias, confirmed that municipal teams are actively assessing damages across the island. Specialists suggest that the main shock has likely occurred and significant aftershock activity is unlikely. Several smaller tremors followed, ranging from 2.1 to 2.8 magnitudes, but none caused further concern.
