Alarming findings emerge from an updated analysis of wildfire-burned areas across mainland Attica between 2017 and 2025. The update was prompted by the recent forest fire in Oinoi, Attica, on 5 July 2026.
According to data from the Copernicus Emergency Management Service’s Rapid Mapping service and the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), 13 major wildfires during this period have scorched more than 700,000 stremmata — roughly 70,000 hectares. A map showing the perimeter of burned areas accompanies this report.
The total land area of the Attica region — excluding the Troizina area, islands, and the Athens basin — stands at approximately 2.5 million stremmata. That means nearly 28% of Attica’s total land surface has been affected by wildfires over the past nine years.
Attica’s forested area totals about 1.23 million stremmata. Of that, around 465,000 stremmata — or 38% — have been lost to fires since 2017. Scientists hope large-scale wildfires can be avoided nationwide in 2026, preventing further increases to this figure.
