2026 Tax Returns: One-Week Extension Under Consideration by Finance Ministry

The Independent Authority for Public Revenue (IAPR) is considering a one-week extension for the submission of 2026 income tax returns, following repeated requests from tax consultants, accountants, and market stakeholders. The current deadline of 15 July is expected to be pushed to at least 22 July to ease pressure on taxpayers who have yet to file their annual returns with the tax administration.

According to the latest available data, approximately 6 million tax returns have been submitted so far this year. The IAPR estimates that the total number of filings will reach around 6.9 million — meaning roughly 900,000 declarations remain outstanding with just six days left. This translates into an exceptionally high daily workload for accounting firms.

Professional Associations Raise Concerns

The Panhellenic Federation of Freelance Tax Consultants (POFEE) and the Panhellenic Federation of Accountants highlight mounting operational challenges: the integration of MyDATA, multiple overlapping platforms, recurring technical issues, frequent circulars, and contradictory guidance have all added significant strain to an already heavy workload — particularly for individual and corporate income tax filings.

In joint statements, the associations state: “Once again, despite official rhetoric, the state has proven ineffective in supporting working conditions across an entire professional sector. Timely completion of tax returns should not be an annual crisis — especially when it undermines something as essential as colleagues’ vacation time.”

Key Operational Bottlenecks

The Chamber of Certified Accountants (O.E.E.) has identified several critical issues hindering the filing process:

  • Delays in adjustment entries: Adjusting journal entries — such as year-end inventory postings and depreciation calculations — take 24 to 48 hours to appear on the myDATA platform and update Form E3, disrupting workflow continuity.
  • Pending Claw Back and Rebate notifications for FY 2025: These official documents, crucial for healthcare providers (clinics, physicians, pharmacies, etc.), have not yet been issued — preventing businesses from finalising their 2025 financial results.
  • e-ΕΦΚΑ platform unavailability: Ongoing system upgrades have temporarily blocked access to the e-ΕΦΚΑ portal, making it impossible to retrieve 2025 social security contribution certificates.

Given these constraints, a minimum one-week extension appears highly likely.

Average Tax Liability: €1,909

Data from the IAPR shows that roughly 87% of obligated taxpayers have already filed their returns. Of those, 34.46% owe additional tax, while the rest either owe no tax or are due a refund. To date, 6.1 million returns have been submitted.
