More than 1.5 million taxpayers are entering the final window to review and correct their pre-filled tax returns, as the Greek Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) will automatically finalize submissions on 16 April 2026 for those who have not taken action by then.
Who’s Affected?
This deadline primarily concerns salaried employees and pensioners — individuals whose 2026 tax returns were pre-completed and pre-calculated by AADE this year. According to official AADE data, 1,357,222 returns, covering 1,553,123 taxpayers, are already available on the myAADE platform. Unless taxpayers intervene, these returns will lock automatically on Wednesday, 16 April 2026.
What Needs Checking?
Taxpayers should verify all pre-filled information — including income figures, tax withholdings, tax evidence (e.g., receipts or certificates), and other auto-populated fields. Any errors, omissions, or inconsistencies must be corrected immediately via the myAADE platform before the 16 April cutoff. If left unaddressed, the first tax assessment will be issued based solely on the submitted (and potentially inaccurate) data — possibly resulting in an inflated tax liability or altered refund amount.
Correction Window & Payment Incentives
From 17 April to 15 July 2026, taxpayers may file amended returns without penalties. For those with a tax balance due after finalization, a 4% discount remains available if the full amount is paid in a single installment by 31 July 2026.
This 4% discount applies both to returns automatically finalized on 16 April and to amendments filed by 30 April 2026. However, if an amendment filed after 1 May results in additional tax owed, the discount drops to 3% until 15 June and further to 2% until 15 July.
Why Review Is Essential
A pre-filled return is not guaranteed to be accurate. While data comes from employers, social security funds, banks, and other reporting entities, discrepancies can arise — especially in cases involving mid-year job changes, bonuses, retroactive payments, shifts in family status, or complex income sources requiring closer scrutiny.
Overall Filing Deadlines
The general deadline for submitting 2026 tax returns is 15 July 2026. For individuals involved in legal entities or partnerships maintaining simplified accounting books, the deadline extends to 31 July 2026. But for the 1.5 million taxpayers who already have their pre-filled returns ready, the immediate priority is verification and correction — before 16 April.
