For the anthropologist Edmund Leach, the anti-europeans of the time were isolationists who showed “the same degree of contact with the rational possibility as a bill of lading of a cargo from New Guinea”. Meanwhile, during the same period, the playwright John Osborne said the Union with Europe as “the last desperate dull dream, than traders without vision, imagination or self-respect, a sense for the life or the story”
A few days later, 17.378.581 people voted in favour of the common market of Europe, the precursor of the European Union.
Given that the fate of the European Union and up to yesterday was in a delicate balance, we take a look back at the controversial campaign of the early 1970s, when Great Britain was divided with regard to the future, as it is today.
