11-Year-Old Boy Suffered Severe Rash After Being Stung by Sea Anemone in Chania

Authorities and local health officials in the Chania region are on high alert following multiple incidents involving sea anemone stings, particularly affecting children. At least five such incidents were reported over the past weekend, including four adults and an 11-year-old boy who was stung on his body and face, as seen in photographic evidence. These incidents required treatment with cortisone-based creams at local pharmacies. Last week, two children aged 5 and 11 were stung at Vlite Beach and had to be taken to Chania Hospital due to severe rashes. The repeated occurrences have alarmed parents and children alike. Sea anemones belong to the cnidarian phylum, like jellyfish and corals. While not typically dangerous, their stings can cause pain, redness, swelling, or itching, especially for sensitive individuals. If stung, it is advised to immediately exit the water, avoid rubbing the affected area, rinse with saltwater, gently remove visible remains, apply vinegar or alcohol if available, use cold compresses, take antihistamines or pain relievers if necessary, and monitor for allergic reactions. Medical attention should be sought if symptoms persist or worsen.
