1 Participatory Consultation of the Strategy for Smart Specialisation of the Region of Crete-Environmental Sector

A priority for the Region of Crete is the diffusion of “Smart Specialisation” that produce the scientific-research and…
educational institutions of the island in the real economy, which will strengthen growth, employment and social cohesion. This is highlighted in the short speech of the Prefect of Crete Stavros Arnaoutakis in the 1st Participative Workshop for the Consultation of the Environmental Sector Strategy of Smart Specialisation carried out by the Region of Crete in Iraklion (Pancretan Bank). The Governor thanking them for the good cooperation that exists between the human potential of the Region with the operators invited the representatives of the productive classes to make use of the specialized information that it offers for a competitive development of European projects office of the Region of Crete in Brussels.
The workshop discussed the proposals submitted by investors and researchers for the sub-sector of Energy and Water Resources, at the invitation of the Region of Crete in the framework of the “Entrepreneurial Discovery (entepreneurial discovery)”. This process is the most modern approach to development planning, where stakeholders analyze, plan, and adjust the investment and technological strategies, depending on the evolving competitive environment and the market trends. The aim is to create a co-perception of the priorities of specialization, the label of technological priority lines, the focus on value chains in specific research areas of business for the support of entrepreneurship and research/innovation.
In particular, the workshop discussed proposals for projects in the following investment priorities:
• New technologies for reducing water losses, optimal management of water services and infrastructure for the rational use and reuse.
• Development of innovative systems for management of municipal and industrial wastewater and pilot applications for filtration using filter or membrane.
• Recovery and reuse of components from waste water (phosphorus – nitrogen-other by-products).
• Applications monitoring and forecasting environmental parameters and utilization of groundwater and marine water to cover human needs
• Production of new or improved building materials and systems of construction for the building sector, urban regeneration and infrastructure projects.
• Integration of bioclimatic elements of energy-saving technologies and renewable energy technologies in existing and new buildings.
• Improve efficiency (reduce energy consumption of heating systems, cooling, lighting, water supply, irrigation, wastewater management, solid waste management and, in general, large infrastructure).
• New and improved materials for renewable energy systems.
• Development and implementation of renewable energy technologies/energy savings tailored to the needs of the productive sectors of Crete and, more generally, adapted to the conditions of Crete.
The process of entrepreneurial discovery in the Environmental Field is in progress for the above-mentioned thematic priorities, and for this purpose the Region of Crete encourages the business and research world of the island for the deposit of proposals and their participation in the consultation.
